It is very common for victims of domestic violence to experience severe stress, and that’s why it’s important that stress is managed and to be aware of the warning signs of a looming nervous breakdown. According to an article published on Power of Positivity, “a nervous or mental breakdown is a term used to describe a period of intense mental distress. During this period, you’re unable to function in your everyday life.”
To prevent this, watch out for the following warning signs in your behaviour and take the necessary precautionary measures:
- Abuse of alcohol and drugs
If you are starting to drink excessively or using drugs to cope with the stressors of life, this is a warning sign, because “mental breakdowns and substance abuse often go hand-in-hand.” Alcohol and drug abuse exacerbate the problem and it intensifies other symptoms.
- Sleeping too much or too little
Sleeping too much could be used as a form of escapism from the harsh realities of life and lack of sleep could be the result of “overthinking, substance abuse and hormonal changes are three common ones.”
- Brain fog
Brain fog refers to a lack of consciousness or “clouding of consciousness” which can negatively impact the “brain’s executive functions of attention, planning, self-control, decision-making, and memory.”
