In an article on domesticshelters.org, Kristen Paruginog, founder and executive director of Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence, discusses how her partner helped her from her to transition from an unhealthy to a healthy relationship. Paruginog shared her story with her partner soon after they met.
Here’s how her new partner was able to help her:
- He learned as much as he could about domestic violence
- He never said “just get over it”, as this minimises the victim;s experience
- He learnt her love language, “so you can learn how to speak to them in the ways they will listen to the most.
- He was patient
- He learnt what triggered her and tried his best not to be that trigger
According to Paruginog, even though your partner can play a significant role to help you heal, they can’t help you if you don’t take the time to process and heal from the trauma of abuse.
